Introduction

Google has announced that Universal Analytics will stop measuring data as of July 1st, 2023, requiring all users to migrate to Google Analytics 4 (GA4). eDirectory versions 13.2 and later are fully compatible with GA4, allowing for seamless configuration directly on the site. For detailed instructions on setting up GA4, refer to this article: How do I configure Google Analytics?

However, for users running eDirectory versions 13.1 or earlier, the platform does not support the native configuration of Analytics 4, as it still displays the default Universal Analytics format (e.g., UA-2623236-1).

To install Google Analytics 4 on older versions, you will need to use Google Tag Manager. This article will guide you step-by-step on how to set up GA4 with Google Tag Manager.

Steps to Configure Google Analytics 4 with Google Tag Manager

1. Ensure Google Tag Manager is Configured on Your Site

If you do not yet have Google Tag Manager set up, please follow the instructions in this article: Google Tag Manager Configuration.

Note: Follow the steps up to Step 4 in the referenced article.

2. Create a Google Analytics 4 Property

Set up a new Google Analytics 4 property and copy the Measurement ID (e.g., G-123456789). Instructions for creating a GA4 property can be found here:
How do I configure Google Analytics?.

Note: Complete the instructions up to Step 8 in the referenced article.

3. Log in to Google Tag Manager and Create a New Tag

  • In your Google Tag Manager account, navigate to TagsNew.

4. Configure the Tag

  • Click on Tag Configuration.

  • Select the option Google Tag.

5. Add Your GA4 Measurement ID

  • Enter the Measurement ID that you copied in Step 2 into the designated field.

6. Set Up the Triggering Rules

  • Click on Triggering.
  • Select the option All Pages. This ensures that Google Analytics 4 will track all pages of your website.
  • Click on Save to confirm your settings.

7. Submit the Changes

  • After creating your tag, you must submit the changes to make them live.
  • Click the Submit button at the top-right corner.
Note: If you do not click Submit, your changes will not take effect.

8. Publish the Tag

  • Add a Name and a short Description for your submission.
  • Click on Publish to finalize.

9. Confirm the Tag is Live

  • After publishing, you will see a confirmation message indicating that the tag is now live on your website.

Conclusion

Configuring Google Analytics 4 with Google Tag Manager is an effective solution for users of older eDirectory versions (13.1 and earlier). By following the steps outlined above, you can successfully track and analyze user interactions on your website using Google Analytics 4.
